Tax and HMRC
HMRC runs a different line for each tax, all on standard-rate 0300 numbers that sit inside most call allowances. January (the Self Assessment deadline) and April (the new tax year) are the worst months to call, and HMRC's own guidance says 8:30am to 11am is the quietest window. Before queueing, try your personal tax account: tax codes, statements and references are all in there. And if you cannot pay a bill, the payment problems lines agree instalment plans routinely, provided you call before the debt escalates.
