There are 2 PIP lines and they do different jobs. The enquiry line handles existing claims: payments, reviews, changes of circumstances. The new claims line is only for starting a claim.

Best time to call

The enquiry line opens at 9am and the new claims line at 8am. As with most DWP lines, the first hour after opening and mid-afternoon tend to be quieter than lunchtime and Monday mornings.

Have this ready before you call

  • Your National Insurance number
  • Your date of birth
  • Your bank or building society details (for a new claim)
  • Your GP or health professional's contact details (for a new claim)
  • Dates of any time spent abroad, in hospital or in a care home (for a new claim)

Common questions

Is the PIP phone number free to call?

Yes. Both PIP lines are 0800 numbers, free from UK mobiles and landlines.

Which PIP number do I call about a decision or payment?

The enquiry line, 0800 121 4433. The new claims line cannot help with an existing claim.

Can I use British Sign Language?

Yes. DWP offers a video relay service for BSL users; the link is on the gov.uk PIP pages. Relay UK also works on both lines: dial 18001 before the number.
